Things you didn’t know about Ibiza’s port

Table of contents

Did you know that the history of the port of Ibiza dates back to 650 BC?

One of the most curious facts is that it was the Carthaginians who began to exploit it as a naval base when they founded the Punic colony of Ibiza. Although it is also true that the Carthaginians were not the only ones to benefit from the port of Ibiza, as the Romans also took advantage of its privileged location for commercial activity. However, no record of maritime works has been found until 1616. Today, the port of Ibiza is a modern port with infrastructures dating from the early 20th century, one of the star stopovers on cruise ships in the western Mediterranean and a base for ferry trips to the small island of Formentera. Since then there have been continuous refurbishments that have made it what it is today: a port for both goods and passengers.

News from the port of Ibiza

In the day-to-day life of the port of Ibiza, apart from the cruise ships, there is a constant coming and going of container ships, sailing boats, fishing boats, ferries and motor planes. To the south, the port extends through the historic fishermen’s and sailors’ quarters of La Marina and Sa Penya, nowadays meeting places for the holidaying community. At the main ferry station, Estació Marítima, the large ships arrive from the mainland, and just behind them stands the Monument to the Corsairs. This monument, built in the early 20th century, has a distinctive obelisk shape that commemorates the “glorious deeds” of the local sea dogs, who took on much larger ships.

Another monument at the junction of Santa Eulària d’es Riu avenue commemorates the more peaceful Gent de la mar (people of the sea). The west side of the port is reserved for the Formentera boat terminal, the yacht club, the fishing dock and the container loading station. On the north side, the marinas Eivissa Nova and Marina Botafoc are lined up, which together have about a thousand moorings and offer wonderful views.
