From 2021 the world’s largest yacht is being built by the Norwegian shipyard VARD. The private superyacht called Somnio will set the new record as the largest yacht in the world, at 728 feet, with a price tag of 600 million dollars. However, this is not its only and main feature, as the Norwegian shipyard proposes a new concept of co-ownership. Most megayachts are owned by the owners for their personal use.
New records
Setting these kinds of new records might not sit well with other famous megayacht owners like Jeff Bezos, who was recently linked to the world’s largest sailing yacht at 417 feet. Bezos’ boat has a 246-foot-long tender (where the helipad is located), which will give his floating metropolis a total length of 663 feet, no less than 65 feet less than the Somnio.
The previous holder of the world’s largest yacht was Azzam, with its 1,500-metre yacht.
Somnio
The Somnio will be the world’s first residential ship 39 luxury condominiums, each with an individual owner, making it not only the largest yacht in the world, but also the one with the most individual owners of any ship ever built. The starting price for the condos is about $11.2 million and it appears that there are already several interested parties. Several units sold immediately, and the remaining purchase opportunities are “by invitation or referral only”. The property will remain a closely guarded secret, though.
The superyacht Somnio has also been dubbed the world’s first “yacht liner”. This masterpiece is a design by Winch Design in collaboration with Tillberg Design, both of whom have an impressive portfolio of famous megayachts including masterpieces such as the Cosmos and the TDoS sailing yacht. The yacht will be available from 2024 and will be the largest superyacht in the world in terms of both length and volume, with a gross tonnage of 33,500 tonnes spread over 6 decks.
This will be the world’s only residential superyacht, designed to exacting standards for a life of opportunity. Owners will share a truly unique lifestyle at sea, with a carefully selected crew and an endless global itinerary of carefully selected destinations and experiences befitting a yacht of this nature.
What does the world’s largest yacht contain?
Each of the 39 units is available for customisation, but will include a fully equipped kitchen, fitted wardrobes and various cabins to suit each owner’s needs. Other facilities shared among all guests will include a gym, library, beach club, several swimming pools and indoor and outdoor restaurants. Owners will even have access to a 10,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room. An exclusive bow lounge will be incorporated to offer unparalleled views while sailing.
As if all this were not enough, Somnio will also be equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment so that marine scientists and researchers can explore ocean environments in a professional setting. As Somnio is scheduled to travel the globe with stops anywhere from the Mediterranean to Antarctica, adding a professional research contingent makes it even more viable for its various voyages.
